From the time of Israel's journey through the desert, one nation was cited as one of the great enemies of God's people: Amalek.
It was a nation formed by desert raiders, who attacked other peoples and stole what they produced, leaving them without any sustenance, while they enjoyed the spoils of war.
A Síndrome De Amaleque: O Inimigo Que A Igreja Poupou
Exodus 17:8-16 It records the famous episode in which Moses had to have his hands supported by Aaron and Hur so that divine blessing would be granted to Israel to end the attacks of the Amalekites, and even in verse 14 appears God's promise to end this plundering people definitively, "erasing their memory from under heaven.".
However, that promise was not fulfilled immediately.
As we can see in 1º Samuel 15, It was in a war against Amalek that the first king of Israel, Saul, was definitively rejected by God, after failing to carry out his orders to completely exterminate that people, sparing neither the king, nor the people, nor their possessions.
Saul, who had already been warned by Samuel that his kingdom would not endure after his first failure to obey a divine order (see 1º Samuel 13:8-14), was confronted by the prophet in an even harsher manner, in the well-known episode in which he tried to restrain him, tearing the hem of his cloak, and hearing that in doing so the kingdom of Israel would be torn from him.
The reason for this harsh divine order—for the complete extermination of Amalek—is clear in Samuel's pronouncement of the death sentence against the king of that people, Agag:
In response to this, Samuel replied:
“"Just as your sword has taken children from women, so your mother will be bereaved of her son among women!"”
And at that very moment he hewed Agag in pieces before the Lord in Gilgal.
Amalek, being a people who lived by plunder and war, did not care about the lives of the peoples they targeted: they simply did not feel guilty about the barbarities they committed; all they cared about was continuing in the role of, so to speak, "predator" of other nations. Therefore, God, in his perfect sense of justice, decided to definitively exterminate this people, which in fact came to pass: there are no more Amalekites in the world today.
O ponto que agora quero destacar nessa história é o risco iminente da contaminação espiritual: uma coisa que NUNCA devemos fazer é abrir brechas para o mal, ou, como se diz no adágio popular, “Com o mal não se negocia”!
A Tolerância Como Porta Para A Apostasia
Throughout the books of Joshua and Judges, history itself presents Israel disobeying divine commands: the Israelites not only failed to completely exterminate the pagan peoples who had occupied Canaan, but they also kept some members of those peoples alive and living among them!
The result was the worst one could imagine: Israel ended up, first, tolerating, then becoming accustomed to, and finally adopting the idolatrous and pagan customs of the remnants of these peoples, repeatedly corrupting itself before God and having to face the consequences of this, losing the Lord's care and being involved in wars, plundered, and even subjected to the tyranny of other peoples, until it repented and cried out to God for deliverance.
Ao olhar essa situação “de fora”, muitos cristãos do mundo de hoje podem sentir-se tentados a considerar a tolice de Israel como absurda — o que, de fato, é verdade — sem, porém, desenvolver a capacidade de perceber que, muitas vezes, são eles próprios a cair na mesma tolice!
How many Christians in the world today create loopholes, for example, to tolerate and even minimize the harmful effects of accepting anti-Christian ideologies in their midst?
Não são muito numerosos, em face do montante total, os que têm a coragem de denunciar a contaminação espiritual gerada por coisas como ideologia de gênero, aborto, ecumenismo, “politicamente correto” e tantas outras tão comuns no mundo de hoje, como coisas explicitamente contrárias à fé que professam.
In a world where it is preached that so-called "love" should be above all else—even what is just and honest—many who call themselves "Christians" simply close their eyes to the danger they are exposing themselves to by tolerating such things and even, at times, engaging in a mental "double life," finding a way to reconcile such things with faith in Christ, as if it were possible to mix oil and water.
O Alerta De Paulo Contra As Ideologias Modernas
The apostle Paul makes it very clear that Christians cannot tolerate such things, writing emphatically:
And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness;
On the contrary, condemn them;
Because it's shameful even to mention the things they do in secret.
As you can see, not condemning such things, whether in Paul's time or today, is to become complicit in them!
Once again, as has been said, "evil is not negotiable.".
It's no wonder that many communities and individuals within the Christian world are showing themselves to be identical to the world, accepting things like those mentioned above and so many others... and this will not go unanswered nor without due correction from God, just as it did not in biblical times!
Therefore, Christians must keep in mind that their standard is not—and can never be!—based on the values and principles of the world, however "appealing" they may seem: the Christian standard must be that of Jesus Christ, both in terms of holiness and righteousness.
Even if a Christian cannot attain the perfection of Christ in this world, he must never allow himself to be intimidated or influenced by what the world thinks, negotiating with evil: on the contrary, he must seek to be as different as possible from what the world presents, so that he may, when presenting himself before God, be part of a church without blemish, without defect, but holy and perfect, through the merits of Christ (see Ephesians 5:27).
Let us not tolerate, nor become accustomed to, what displeases God.
Christians are no longer part of the world and should not model themselves on it, but on the one who died and rose again for them.
