Well known for appearing on many t-shirts, a print that ended up giving its name to some companies and brands features the expression "CARPE DIEM," a phrase that many use without even knowing what it means or the reason why it was uttered in the past.
Its origin dates back to medieval monasteries, where it was used as a greeting and received, in response, another phrase in Latin: when one monk met another, he greeted him saying "CARPE DIEM" and the other, in turn, replied "MEMENTO MORI".
Let's present (or remind you of) the literal meaning of this brief dialogue:
\u2014 Carpe Diem!Enjoy your day!<\/em>)
\u2014 Memento Mori. (Remember that you will die.<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although such a greeting and its response may seem somewhat morbid to our current culture, they merely express a truth that few pay attention to: life in this world is NOT ETERNAL.
\u201c"Making the most of the day," in the context of the monks, meant meditating, saying their prayers... in short, everything they believed was important for having a vibrant spirituality, a relationship with God. Biblically speaking, this thinking is mistaken, but that's beside the point now, as the central point of this reflection is something that can be seen in one of the best-known Psalms, the only one attributed to Moses in the Psalter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

The days of our lives are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
Who knows the power of your anger?
According to how tremendous you are, so is your fury.
Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.<\/p>\n(Psalm 90:10-12 \u2013 ACF)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Although it may seem like a long time, especially during childhood and adolescence, seventy or eighty years is, in fact, the average lifespan of most people\u2014and, interestingly, the person who wrote these words lived to be 120 years old (according to...). Deuteronomy 34:7<\/mark><\/strong>The truth is that, from a divine perspective, this is the same as nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few years ago, the well-known preacher Paul Washer, in a sermon addressed to students at Mackenzie University, began the subject with the following words:
\u201cIn four or five years, most of you will be graduating. In fifteen years, you will see that most of your dreams, your expectations, have not come true and will not come true. In twenty years, you will feel your beauty and your strength being consumed. In thirty years, you will be starting to think about death. In one hundred years, you will all be dead. And those who held you in their memories will also die.\u201d<\/mark><\/em>
Although it might seem that Paul Wahser was being a tremendous spoilsport by saying this to hundreds of young people in their 20s, he wasn't lying.
In our youth, we really tend to feel invincible and capable of anything, of achieving anything we desire, easily forgetting to look at older people and see that, among them, those who have fulfilled their dreams are the exception, not the rule\u2026 and, even worse, we don't usually think much about the reality of aging and death.
There was a case, well known in my home church, that perfectly illustrates the rashness and impetuosity characteristic of youth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the project for the construction of a temple was being discussed, back in the 1950s, with most members being people in their 20s or 30s, the approved plan included a 30-step staircase as access to the temple nave for worship.
The argument was that, with the temple being taller, it would be visible from further away, acting as a kind of "invitation" to the neighborhood to visit it. The older residents complained, saying that this would make it difficult for them to get around, but their opinions were outvoted, and the temple was built with the enormous staircase.
In the 1990s, however, with all the older voters from the 1950s having passed away, the complaint about the size of the staircase shifted to those who were young at the time of construction, due to the effort required to enter the temple\u2026
What mistake was made?
Simply put: the young people of the 1950s forgot that THEY THEMSELVES WOULD ALSO GROW OLD in the future!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul Washer was right when he reminded young college students that life is fleeting, and if this has changed anything in their lives, only the Holy Spirit knows.
Moses, in turn, highlights this reality very clearly and makes the best possible recommendation in this case: MAY GOD TEACH US TO NUMBER OUR DAYS!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c"Counting the days" refers to remembering everything we have already lived through and the time that has passed, time that will never return and that we will never experience again.
With this "countdown," we are reminded both that the time we have left in this world diminishes with each passing moment and that earthly existence does not last forever.
The book of Ecclesiastes shows, very clearly, the futility of spending one's life focused on earthly things: King Solomon\u2014after having satisfied all the desires of his heart and even having momentarily turned away from God by worshipping idols\u2014recognizes, at the end of his life, that everything in this world is "vanity," or, in a literal translation, "Soap Bubble.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like a bubble\u2014colorful and beautiful on the outside, but empty inside and bursting with a simple touch\u2014Earth's joys can end suddenly and instantly: those who don't count their days don't realize that the end comes for everyone. The wise, therefore, count them.
And this is a consequence of true wisdom, which is the fear of God, something also stated by Solomon himself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is prudence.<\/p>\n(Proverbs 9:10 \u2013 ACF)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Knowing that the encounter with God is something no one can escape, the truly wise person seeks to prepare for this encounter, not focusing their existence on things that will remain on Earth when they depart, but, like the apostle Paul, considering everything that is occasionally left behind as "rubbish," so as not to lose communion with Christ (see Philippians 3:8<\/mark><\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Losses may and certainly will occur, but for those who count their days... the most important thing will be guaranteed: the eternal kingdom with Christ.
Therefore, let the brevity of earthly life not be forgotten by those who desire full communion with God in the New Jerusalem, where death, pain, sadness, and tears will never exist again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes;
And there will be no more death, nor mourning, nor crying, nor pain;
because the former things have passed away.<\/p>\n(Revelation 21:4 \u2013 ACF)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

So, let's count our days.

So, before the Lord returns like a thief in the night, we can already see signs of the prophesied reign of the Antichrist taking hold not only in Brazil, but throughout the world!

Biblicamente falando, tal pensamento \u00e9 equivocado, mas isso n\u00e3o vem ao caso agora, pois o ponto central desta reflex\u00e3o \u00e9 algo que pode ser visto em um dos Salmos mais conhecidos, o \u00fanico atribu\u00eddo a Mois\u00e9s no Salt\u00e9rio: Os dias da nossa vida chegam a setenta anos, e se alguns, pela sua robustez, chegam a oitenta anos, o orgulho deles \u00e9 canseira e enfado, pois cedo se corta e vamos voando.Quem conhece o poder da tua ira?Segundo \u00e9s tremendo, assim \u00e9 o teu furor.Ensina-nos a contar os nossos dias, de tal maneira que alcancemos cora\u00e7\u00f5es s\u00e1bios. (Salmos 90:10-12 – ACF) Apesar de parecer muito, especialmente na inf\u00e2ncia e na adolesc\u00eancia, os setenta ou oitenta anos que, de fato, s\u00e3o a m\u00e9dia da vida de grande parte das pessoas \u2014 e, curiosamente, quem escreveu essas palavras chegou a 120 anos de vida (conforme Deuteron\u00f4mio 34:7) \u2014 a verdade \u00e9 que isso, na perspectiva divina, \u00e9 o mesmo que nada. H\u00e1 alguns anos, o conhecido pregador Paul Washer, em um serm\u00e3o dirigido aos estudantes da Universidade Mackenzie, iniciou o assunto com as seguintes palavras:“Dentro de 4 ou 5 anos a maioria de voc\u00eas estar\u00e1 se formando. Dentro de 15 anos voc\u00ea ver\u00e1 que a maioria dos seus sonhos, das suas expectativas, n\u00e3o se tornaram e nem se tornar\u00e3o realidade. Dentro de 20 anos voc\u00ea sentir\u00e1 a sua beleza e a sua for\u00e7a sendo consumidas. Dentro de 30 anos voc\u00ea vai estar come\u00e7ando a pensar na morte. E aqueles que os tinham em suas mem\u00f3rias tamb\u00e9m v\u00e3o morrer.”Embora pare\u00e7a que Paul Wahser estava sendo um tremendo desmancha-prazeres ao dizer isso a centenas de jovens na casa dos 20 anos, ele n\u00e3o disse nenhuma mentira.Na juventude, realmente temos a tend\u00eancia de nos sentirmos invenc\u00edveis e capazes de tudo, de alcan\u00e7ar qualquer coisa que desejemos, nos esquecendo facilmente de olhar para os mais velhos e ver que, entre eles, os que realizaram seus sonhos s\u00e3o a exce\u00e7\u00e3o, e n\u00e3o a regra\u2026 e, pior ainda, n\u00e3o costumamos pensar muito na realidade do envelhecimento e da morte.Houve um caso, bem conhecido em minha igreja de origem, que ilustra muito bem a precipita\u00e7\u00e3o e impetuosidade caracter\u00edsticas da juventude: Quando se discutia o projeto para a contru\u00e7\u00e3o de um templo, isso nos idos da d\u00e9cada de 1950, com a maioria dos membros sendo pessoas na casa dos 20 ou 30 anos, foi aprovada a planta que previa uma escada de 30 degraus como acesso, para o culto, \u00e0 nave do templo.A alega\u00e7\u00e3o era de que, com o templo mais alto, seria visto de mais longe, como um tipo de “convite” \u00e0 vizinhan\u00e7a para visit\u00e1-lo. Os mais velhos reclamaram, dizendo que isso dificultaria sua locomo\u00e7\u00e3o, mas foram votos vencidos e o templo foi constru\u00eddo com a enorme escadaria.Nos anos 90, por\u00e9m, com todos os mais velhos votantes da d\u00e9cada de 1950 j\u00e1 tendo partido deste mundo, a reclama\u00e7\u00e3o do tamanho da escadaria passou a partir dos que, na \u00e9poca da constru\u00e7\u00e3o, eram jovens, devido ao esfor\u00e7o necess\u00e1rio para se entrar no templo\u2026Qual foi o equ\u00edvoco cometido?Simples: os jovens dos anos 50 esqueceram que ELES PR\u00d3PRIOS TAMB\u00c9M FICARIAM VELHOS no futuro! Paul Washer n\u00e3o errou ao lembrar os jovens universit\u00e1rios de que a vida \u00e9 passageira e se isso mudou algo na vida deles, s\u00f3 o Esp\u00edrito Santo sabe.Mois\u00e9s, por sua vez, ressalta essa realidade de forma muito clara e faz a melhor recomenda\u00e7\u00e3o poss\u00edvel neste caso: QUE DEUS NOS ENSINE A CONTAR OS NOSSOS DIAS! “Contar os dias” \u00e9 uma refer\u00eancia a lembrar de tudo o que j\u00e1 vivemos e o tempo que j\u00e1 se passou, tempo esse que n\u00e3o vai mais voltar e nunca mais viveremos outra vez.Com essa “contagem”, somos lembrados tanto de que o tempo que nos resta neste mundo diminui a cada momento que passa quanto de que a exist\u00eancia terrena n\u00e3o permanece para sempre.O livro de Eclesiastes mostra, de forma muito clara, a futilidade de se passar a exist\u00eancia concentrado nas coisas da Terra: o rei Salom\u00e3o \u2014 ap\u00f3s ter satisfeito todos os desejos de seu cora\u00e7\u00e3o e, inclusive, haver se afastado momentaneamente de Deus ao adorar \u00eddolos \u2014 reconhece, no fim de sua vida, que tudo neste mundo \u00e9 “vaidade”, ou, na tradu\u00e7\u00e3o literal, “Bolha de Sab\u00e3o”. Tal como uma bolha \u2014 que \u00e9 colorida e bela por fora, mas vazia por dentro e estoura com um simploes toque \u2014 as alegrias da Terra podem acabar de forma repentina e instant\u00e2nea: quem n\u00e3o conta seus dias, n\u00e3o se apercebe que o fim chega para todos. O s\u00e1bio, por isso, os conta.E isso \u00e9 consequ\u00eancia da verdadeira sabedoria, que \u00e9 o temor de Deus, algo dito tamb\u00e9m pelo pr\u00f3prio Salom\u00e3o: O temor do SENHOR \u00e9 o princ\u00edpio da sabedoria,e o conhecimento do Santo a prud\u00eancia.
