Climbing the Mountain

Originally published on October 6, 2005, the act of "climbing the mountain" caught my attention that day when I started reading some testimonies within the virtual groups I frequented, and, because I had a friend who narrated exactly the same type of experience (fire all around, miracles... screaming!), I decided to research the subject further, and what I bring to you today is a revised version of the arguments presented in that topic.
Climb the mountain... why?

Why was Jesus going up the mountain?

We can find several explanatory biblical quotes about this, let's take a look:

After he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.
And, as evening approached, he was there alone.

(Matthew 14:23, ref. Mark 6:46-47

And it came to pass in those days, that he went up into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.

(Luke 6:12)

And it happened that, almost eight days after these words,
He took with him Peter, John, and James,
and went up the mountain to pray.

(Luke 9:28, ref. Mark 9:2

We can conclude, then, that Jesus went up the mountain to pray and generally did so alone: the only time he invited someone else—Peter, John, and James—and he did so because..., being God, ...knowing that it was the unique moment of transfiguration, that is, He was not ascending merely to pray!

THEN Go up the mountain to pray. Is it a duty?

To answer this, let's look at what Jesus Christ himself had already recommended:

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites,
For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners,
so that they could be seen by men.
Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.
But when you pray,
Go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.;
And your Father, who sees you in secret, will reward you openly.

Matthew 6:5-6

And then questions rain down:
— But Christ gives such a clear command in that text… and then did something else?
Why didn't He also lock Himself in His room to pray instead of going up the mountain?
Was he a hypocrite?
Here's a detail that most people seem to deliberately overlook: Jesus Christ didn't have a room!
This is proven by the following text:

And Jesus said:
Foxes have dens and birds of the air have nests.,
But the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.

(Matthew 8:20, ref. Luke 9:58

This means that Jesus went up the mountain to pray alone simply because... He didn't have a room he could call his own., Lock yourself inside and pray!

The problem nowadays is that people no longer know how to understand what they are reading, and, functionally illiterate, They create absurd doctrines based solely on small, completely out-of-context excerpts!
If going up the mountain were a biblical doctrine, we would certainly find more references and recommendations for doing so in biblical texts subsequent to the Gospels; however, such an action is absent from the rest of the New Testament: none of the other authors even mentions "going up the mountain" as a relevant model of worship, adoration, or prayer!

Even before that, the only one who went up the mountain to do something important was Moses, but that was under the direct order of God himself: there is no reference whatsoever to prayer and, even worse, everything that happened there was highly private, with severe restrictions on public access.

And you shall set boundaries around the mountain and instruct the people:
‘'Take care not to go up the mountain,',
and do not even touch its boundaries.
Anyone who touches the mountain will be killed.
No one will lay a hand on him;
He will be stoned or shot with arrows: whether man or beast,
'He certainly won't live'.

(Exodus 19:12-13a)

Still wanting to justify going up the mountain, some will always claim that "if Jesus did something, then we should do it to follow in his footsteps!"
Now, that statement isn't wrong, but Jesus also spat on the ground to make mud and heal a blind man, Jesus walked on water, Jesus resurrected dead people… at this point I ask you to reread and remember what I already said in the study about anointing oilGod does not repeat himself!
Climb the mountain... why?

I want to climb the mountain to see the signs!

And what about all the signs of wonder, healings, fire… all the supernatural things that happen while we are on the mountain?
Please, let's stop being spiritual children and start reading the Bible more seriously!
Those who seek signs and miracles call themselves followers of Jesus Christ, but they don't even bother to read the recommendations about the end times, made by the Son of God himself?

So if someone tells you:
Behold, Christ is here, or there, do not believe him;
For false Christs and false prophets will appear,
and they will perform great signs and wonders that,
If possible, they would deceive even the chosen ones.

(Matthew 24:23-24)

I also recommend reading 2ⁿᵈ Thessalonians 2:1-12 And you see, after the departure of the Holy Spirit, it is Satan himself who will perform great signs… and on this subject I… I've already addressed this here., ...and we cannot fail to mention what is clearly expressed in the Bible: Those who need to see to believe are not blessed.!

Climbing the mountain to receive your prophecy?
IF ANY SIGNS CONVINCE YOU,
Satan is always ready to offer them!
Only genuine Christians can receive it.

THE TRUE PROPHECY

Climbing the mountain... why?

Certainly not to promote chaos, disorder, and shouting.
Considering that, when tempted by Satan, the Lord did not throw himself from the heights, to say that he is invoking the power of God to defy the danger of climbing mountains, which—at least in Rio de Janeiro—were once tranquil and are now controlled by drug trafficking, in the name of an “evangelization” where the The "convert's" involvement in the world of crime will not cease.… that's pure stupidity!

The Lord Jesus Christ prayed on the mountain for a very particular characteristic and did not recommend that anyone else do the same; the Bible, as a whole, also makes no such recommendation.
Therefore, if you truly wish to follow God's word correctly, I suggest that you keep, in addition to Matthew 6:5-6 As mentioned above, the only explicit recommendations regarding suitable places for prayer are:

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

(Matthew 18:20)

Pray without ceasing.

(1ˢᵗ Thessalonians 5:17)

But, Teóphilo, how will I be able to pray without ceasing?
Years after writing that article, the Holy Spirit showed me that I can pray in any place or situation, and that no one, besides God himself, needs to know about it.

Therefore, whether you are in your room, washing dishes, driving, waiting in a crowded room, or even walking past a mountain... your prayer will have exactly the same effect!
