In the original languages of the Bible — both Hebrew (חטא / HATTAH) and Greek (Αμαρτία / HAMARTÍA) — the word translated as “sin” literally means “the arrow that lacks the strength to reach its target.”.
This is an important detail.
It's not simply a matter of MISSING the target, as if only the arrow's direction were wrong, but rather that it could have hit the target if it had been correctly aimed.
The situation is far more serious, indicating an arrow that, even if aimed correctly, would never hit the target because it simply doesn't have enough force to reach it!
This, therefore, shows once again the impossibility of avoiding sin in our present state: holiness is rudimentarily restored in the Christian while still alive, but its fullness will only be achieved in eternal life.
